Weeks lifts Scranton past North Pocono

MOSCOW 2 Scranton senior Mike Weeks did not have to be on the field long to make his presence known. Weeks found the end zone twice in the first half, once on a 65-yard punt return and once on a 19-yard reception, and helped lead Scranton (3-2, 2-0) to a 40-14 win over North Pocono (1-4) on Friday night at North Pocono High School.

"Michael is one of our better players on both sides of the ball and he does a lot for us," Scranton head coach John Marichak said. "He has good hands, good speed and he really came into his own on the field tonight."

Junior running back Kawon Shell also scored twice. He ran the ball 11 times for 58 yards, all in the first half.

Knights quarterback Dan Scherle also had a big night, completing six of nine passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns, including a 50-yard scoring strike to junior wide-receiver Tarrean Barrett. He also completed a 29-yard pass on fourth down to Weeks, who caught the ball while lying on his back.

Scherle's third touchdown pass came with just 12 seconds left in the first half and put the Knights up 40-0.The Trojans looked overmatched from the start as they managed only 14 total yards in their scoreless first half.

The Knights held Trojans starting quarterback Ken Aston to only 17 yards passing. He completed two of eight passes and was sacked three times.

"We came up against an option-offense and we stayed at home very well," Marichak said. "We stayed disciplined and made solid tackles all game."

Third-string quarterback Nick Raven led the Trojans on two late scoring drives, but the Scranton defense was just too physical throughout.

While there was only one turnover in the game, the physical play led to some significant penalty yards. The Knights were penalized nine times for 110 yards.
